Ubuntu Desktop 23.10 release image is being updated to resolve a malicious translation incident

Oliver Smith alerts us to a problem with a translation used by the ubuntu-desktop-installer, leading to the removal of Ubuntu 23.10 ISOs using that installer. We're given some details of the issue, and that it did not impact installed/upgraded systems; then we are told what will occur in the coming days with the production & testing of new ISOs. This post has been, and will remain updated as new details emerge.

"...following an audit of all desktop installer translations, Ubuntu Desktop 23.10 is available for download from https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop. Updated builds for Ubuntu Budgie 23.10 and Ubuntu Desktop 23.10 Lenovo X13s Gen1 are also available."

Canonical releases Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic Minotaur

This official Canonical blog records the release of Ubuntu 23.10. Along with details of the product, we are given links so we can download it. We're told of some improved security, the new app store, support for Raspberry Pi 5 and SiFive HiFive Pro P500 devices, network configuration, and a refreshed Docker.

Subiquity 23.10.1 has been released to the stable channel

Dan Bungert writes that Subiquity 23.10.1 has been released, giving us details of the notable improvements which include TPM-backed full disk encryption. We're of course given a list of bug fixes which are included in this release, and a link to the full changelog.

Call for testing: ubuntu-frame (bugfixes for the `20` and `22` tracks)

Michał Sawicz makes a call for testing of Ubuntu Frame in multiple tracks. The fixes enclosed within are provided, along with the details is how to upgrade and use the candidate channel, after which you use normally. Any problems detected should be reported on this thread, otherwise the packages will be promoted to stable in a week.

Restricted unprivileged user namespaces are coming to Ubuntu 23.10

ijlal-loutfi reminds us Ubuntu Desktop takes security seriously, trying to balance both security and usability. This post provides an "overview of what unprivileged user namespaces are, discusses Ubuntu’s approach to mitigating their security risks, and explains how to start using this feature today and provide us with your feedback".

Updating snap packages: OBS Studio

Alan Pope tells us the OBS Studio snap has been updated, and is now 29.1.3 or the latest stable release. Alan gives us a 'backstory' on the creation of the OBS Studio snap, and includes some interesting analysis of the users of that snap. Next we're walked through some of how Alan upgraded the snap to the current version (with some help from Martin Wimpress).

Researcher bags two-for-one deal on Linux bugs while probing GNOME component

Connor Jones writes about a high-severity remote code execution vulnerability in GNOME based systems tracked as CVE-2023-43641. This blog covers this flaw in libcue rather extensively.

GNOME Merge Requests Opened That Would Drop X.Org Session Support

Michael Larabel writes about "a set of merge requests" that would, once code is removed, make GNOME "a Wayland-only desktop environment". Michael covers this, including some raised concerns that would impact downstream Budgie and Pantheon desktops which haven't completed their transition to Wayland. Quotes from the merge requests, plus links are given with a final summary that 2024 could see GNOME go "Wayland-only".

Curl Preps For "Probably The Worst Curl Security Flaw In A Long Time"

Michael Larabel writes that a Curl library vulnerability has caused the release cycle to be cut short, with curl 8.4.0 released on 11 October 2023 which includes a fix for the high and another low severity CVE. Quotes from the release, plus links for more details are given on what Stenberg describes as "probably the worst curl security flaw in a long time".

Another Bug Found That Limits GNOME's Performance For Secondary GPU Setups

Michael Larabel updates us on some work by Canonical's Daniel van Vugt who has discovered a performance bottleneck for multi-GPU setups. Michael outlines what Daniel discovered, provides us with a link to the bug report, and something to try if we believe we're impacted by this issue.

Intel Arc Graphics See Faster Performance On Ubuntu 23.10

This multi-page report from Michael Larabel explores the benchmark results of a system using Intel Arc Graphics, a stock kernel and Mesa drivers showing both Ubuntu 23.04 Desktop, and the new Ubuntu 23.10 Desktop, as well as a system using the Linux 6.6 kernel and Mesa 23.3-devel.

Running Ubuntu on Apple Silicon Macs is Possible

Joey Sneddon tells us about the efforts on getting "Linux running on Apple silicon", covering the Asahi Linux project. This includes a Ubuntu Asahi project, noting its a community project, even though its lead is a Canonical engineer. We are given links to the Ubuntu Asahi GitHub page, as well as being told prebuilt images of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 23.04 are available to test (with Ubuntu 23.10 coming soon).
