Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS released

Łukasz Zemczak on behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team announces the release of Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS for Desktop, Server, Cloud products, and also the various flavors. Many links are provided if you want to download it, upgrade to it, read the release notes, and more.

Jammy Jellyfish (to be 22.04) now in Feature Freeze

Brian Murray alerts us that Ubuntu Jammy Jellyfish has now reached Feature Freeze, meaning the focus should now be on bug fixing. We are told packages in the jammy-proposed prior to freeze will be allowed, and given a link to the Freeze Exception Process for packages that require it.

Alan Griffiths makes a call out to help test ubuntu-frame, egmde, mir-test-tools, and mir-kiosk that have been updated to work with Mir 2.7. Package versions are provided, and how to update your system to give these snaps a test. We are told to use them normally & report any problems on this thread, with the expectation that the snaps will reach stable next week.

Anbox Cloud 1.13.0 has been released

Simons Fels reports the release of Anbox Cloud 1.13.0. Simons provides a link to the component versions within it, before a review of new features and improvements, then a list of bug fixes included. Many links are provided, plus upgrade instructions.

Plasma 5.24.2 available on Kubuntu 21.10

Kubuntu report Plasma 5.24.2 is now available in their backports PPA for Kubuntu 21.10. We are given a link to the Plasma 5.24.2 announcement so we can know what's included, as well as how to upgrade if we decide to use it. A discussion on whether or not this should be used is provided, as well as where and how to report any found bugs.

Ubuntu Users Get Another Major Kernel Update, Up to 15 Vulnerabilities Patched

Marius Nestor reports that Canonical has released new kernels for all supported releases of Ubuntu that address up to 15 security vulnerabilities. We are given details of the CVEs fixed, as well as who found the flaws, and how attackers could mis-use the system if left unpatched. We are provided details of the kernels that have patches applied, and told to upgrade asap and reboot our systems.

Ji m reminds us of the common package formats: Flatpak, Snap and AppImage. We are told the first two are well integrated into Ubuntu, but that's not the case with AppImage. This post informs users of 'AppImage Pool' and tells us how to use it on our systems. Links and required commands are provided.

AMDGPU X.Org 22.0 Driver Released With AsyncFlipSecondaries, GLAMOR Fixes

Michael Larabel writes that xf86-video-amdgpu 22.0 is out which enhances the experience of Radeon graphics using X.Org. We are told of a notable change being the "AsyncFlipSecondaries" driver option, and how this is significant to us, and of a GLAMOR fix. Nautilus 42 Arrives in Ubuntu 22.04 Daily Builds

Joey Sneddon reports that Nautilus 42 is now available for testing with Ubuntu jammy. We are told it is missing the libadwaita redressing offered in the GTK4 port, but are briefly told some of the features we'll find, which will make it welcomed by users.

Ubuntu applies security fixes for all versions back to 14.04

Liam Proven reports that Canonical has provided updates for Ubuntu 21.10, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 16.04 ESM & Ubuntu 14.04 ESM for security fixes. Liam then goes on to document what some users may not know, that Ubuntu LTS users can get different kernel options. He gives a brief introduction of how this can be done, plus a link to the official wiki page for greater detail. A brief coverage of OEM kernels is provided, before a list of some common apt commands.
