About me

I've been using Ubuntu since March of 2006, and it was the first GNU/Linux distribution that got me "hooked" on Linux. Prior to using Ubuntu, I had used Red Hat Linux 9, Mandrake Linux (back when it was actually called "Mandrake"), Suse 8, and even had several Linux usage "attempts" involving Gentoo. Smile :)

My involvement with the GNU/Linux community at large has been steadily increasing, and I'm now a participating member of the Chicago GNU/Linux User Group and the Ubuntu-Chicago Loco team.

I am also a regular volunteer/community member of [http://www.freegeekchicago.org Free Geek Chicago], an organization dedicated to helping the "needy get nerdy." Free Geek Chicago recycles used technology to provide computers, education, internet access and job skills training to the underserved communities of Chicago. We also happen to use Xubuntu as our Linux distribution of choice. BR I have contributed to this group by assisting during computer tear-down and build sessions, clean-up sessions, and group meetings. I have also written shell scripts to help automate many of the repetitive OS-installation tasks that we perform.

In terms of my online Ubuntu-related activites, you will often find me providing user support, coordinating team activities, or just chatting away in irc rooms such as #xubuntu, #ubuntu-chicago, #ubuntu-iso, and #xubuntu-devel.

Skill Set

I am learning shell scripting and python, and have intermediate linux system administration skills. I triage and report bugs when I'm not doing ISO testing-related activities.

Ubuntu-Specific Contributions

A lot of my contributions don't involve me getting any additional karma points on Launchpad. Sad :( However, I'm a very active member of the Xubuntu team, and am also very involved with the Chicago Loco Team.

I've contributed the most to the ISO testing group, and have built up Xubuntu testing from a mostly non-existent group to one that is on-par with the rest of the Community testing teams (i.e., the testing teams for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu).

I've also lead activities within our Loco team. My activities have included scheduling team meetings, preparing agendas, facilitating discussions, and ensuring that group plans are put into action. (That makes what I do sound really dry, but we have fun as a group, too.)BR This summer I am also collaborating with Ubuntu-Chicago team members to contribute to an existing open-source project, and I am organizing weekly Ubuntu documentation-writing sessions.
