Welcome

This is the homepage for the Minnesota Ubuntu LoCo team.

Note: If you are a member of the previous team (https://launchpad.net/%7Eubuntu-us-mn), this is not a competing team, but rather a new one to comply with the naming standards set forth on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/USTeams#head-6c82d8d4e9a62209daa93b1cdc928c2335d8d431 - please transfer your membership and let us know who you are!

Participate

We are just getting started, so the biggest thing now is attracting new members to get things off the ground. Please start by adding yourself to the Members list below and applying for membership in our team on Launchpad at https://launchpad.net/%7Eubuntu-minnesota. Swing by #ubuntu-minnesota on Freenode's IRC servers to introduce yourself and meet some other members, and once the mailing list comes online, subscribe to that to keep current with group events, ask and answer support questions, and interact with your fellow team members!

Members

Please add your name under the appropriate region (defined by DNR parks regions at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/list.html), along with your IRC nick and city/county.

Objectives

Short Term

Gain a critical mass of members and begin having semi-regular meetings, at least one of which should be of the in-person variety.

Long Term

This group will hopefully serve many purposes, including but not limited to:

  • Socializing with other Ubuntu users from the area
  • As an interface between members, Ubuntu, local LUGs and therefore Linux at large, and the local community and the people and organizations that entails
  • Education, both of our members and of outsiders about what Ubuntu can do for them, and how to use it more effectively
  • Advocacy of Ubuntu to the state, and helping get Ubuntu usage more established in homes, schools, non-profits, and businesses
  • Localisation, particularly in terms of artwork and themes in any way specific to the culture and region of Minnesota
  • Aiding in translation efforts in Rosetta for common second languages besides English in the state, such as Finnish, German, Norwegian, Hmong, Somali, Ojibwe, and Lakota
  • As a distribution center for ShipIt and burned CDs, for more efficient postage

  • As an uplink to coordination with other US teams and around the world
  • Any other ideas you wish to add!

Possible activities

  • Distribute Ubuntu CDs and literature at the 2008 State Fair
