Welcome to the Ubuntu California wiki!

Ubuntu California is a group of volunteers who advocate and promote Ubuntu and Free Software in California. We attend and plan events statewide, contact and work with LUGs and other local groups, and act as the public face of the Ubuntu community in California. The group is open to everybody in the state with an interest in spreading and discussing Ubuntu.

• We had two tables at Picn*x 19 on August 21st in Sunnyvale, CA. Check out the link for photos and more information.

• We participated in Ubuntu Global Jam the weekend of August 27th to 29th.

Projects

• We hold meetings every other Sunday in the #ubuntu-california channel on Freenode IRC. Our IRC Meetings page has more information and dates. All interested people are welcome to join us!

• Join the development on our CD-burning app, 'Buntu Stand.

Goals

• Meet with and join up with local LUGs (Linux User Groups), like this one in Silicon Valley, or these around Los Angeles.

• Have a presence at conferences and events such as Southern California Linux Expo 2008.

• Advocate, advocate, and advocate!

Current Ubuntu Release - 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx

• Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx was announced as Ubuntu's stable release April 29th, 2010. Release notes contain important information and should be read before should be read before upgrading or installing.

• The Canonical press releases for the desktop & server versions have helpful 10.04 LTS overviews. For higher level descriptions, the Canonical Tour of new features and the technical overview might be interesting.

• When downloading 10.04 LTS, please use the *.torrent files and mirrors whenever possible. Using these usually increases your download speed.

• For general Ubuntu information please see www.ubuntu.com If you encounter a technical problem please first try using your favorite search engine to find a solution or begin in one of Ubuntu's many community support areas.

• The Ubuntu Developer Summit for Lucid Lynx 10.04 was held Monday, 16 Nov - Friday 20 Nov 2009, in Dallas, TX. A Technical Overview and Blueprints were used as guides for producing this release.

Development Ubuntu Release - 10.10 Maverick Meerkat

• Maverick Meerkat 10.10 started after the release of 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx. DO NOT install Maverick on production machines. See UbuntuDevelopment/UsingDevelopmentReleases. The final stable version is scheduled to be released on October 10, 2010. This release date is in part a tribute to The Hitchhiker's Guide as 101010 in binary is 42, the answer to life, the universe and everything as described in Mark Shuttleworth's Maverick Keynote video.

• The Ubuntu Developer Summit for Maverick Meerkat 10.10 was held Monday, 10 May - Friday 14 May 2010, in Brussels, Belgium. A Technical Overview and Blueprints are being used as guides for producing this release.

• Several LoCo members are running Maverick for testing purposes. Your participation is encouraged but not required.
