To give us a chance to get to know you (and to weed out spambots), we ask that you get in touch before we approve your join request. Some ways of doing this are using our mailing list or IRC channel, coming to an event or meeting, or contacting one of our group administrators privately. If you have particular skills you'd like to use in the LoCo, already know some ways you'd like to help, or are looking for events in your area, this is a great chance to tell us about who and whereabouts you are, though a quick "hi" is also fine! Ubuntu California has a Launchpad group that's used to keep track of our membership numbers and locations, and as a repository for LoCo materials. To help with this goal, the group has moderated membership: people must apply to the group and then be added by a group administrator. Additionally, membership in the group must be renewed periodically to help keep the membership list current. This page documents these processes.

Note: Launchpad uses the term "team" where this page uses "group". This page uses different terminology to avoid confusion with the LoCo team itself.

Moderated membership

When a person applies to join the Launchpad group (for instructions, see our Get Involved page), a notice is sent to the group's administrators (people with "Administrator" status on the member list). Group administrators are then given the option to approve or reject the join request.

To give us a chance to get to know you (and to weed out spam bots), we ask that you get in touch before we approve your join request. Some ways of doing this are using our mailing list or IRC channel, coming to an event or meeting, or contacting one of our group administrators privately. If you don't receive a response after a week, please let a group administrator know.

Group administrators may periodically reject join requests that haven't been acted on for over a month. If this happens, feel free to re-apply and please contact the LoCo so we can approve you.

Membership renewal

Ubuntu California's Launchpad group requires members to renew their membership periodically to avoid expiration. Launchpad will notify you via email one week before your membership is due to expire. Membership expiration dates are listed on the group member list.

Renewal doesn't require administrator approval, and doesn't have any requirements. Allowing your membership to expire isn't final: you can always rejoin if you change your mind (or forget to renew!).

Your first renewal period will be set to two months. After that, you'll be asked to renew annually.
