<JanC> I'm around
<jean7491> hello JanC , ... hfsdo ? Gh0sty ? and others ?
<jean7491> let's start the meeting !
<jean7491> topic #1. past and future events - September 2010 - update
<jean7491> item #1 Dipro Hasselt (26/09) - report
<jean7491> report is in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ComputerFairs/Hasselt_2010-09-26
<massimo21> everything went well
<jean7491> Clamam – massimo21 comment ?
<massimo21> not really
<clamam> follow the link for the full report https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ComputerFairs/Hasselt_2010-09-26/
<clamam> Setup of the booth:
<clamam> The setup of the booth went smoothly and the U-shaped arrangement on this fair was simple to achieve. We had 1.5 hours of work to complete the booth.Hardware used:
<clamam> 2x PC with monitor 1x server monitor 2x netbooks 2x laptops 1x gamepc with monitor and projector 1x 8-port switch 1x wireless access point for wifi "ubuntu-be" for laptops and netbooksThere was much interest in the ordinary PCs and laptops with ubuntu, the netbooks I found had less success. The hype about the netbooks is not a hypy anumore (on this fair anyway). The (web) server actually had little or no success, this PC next time we
<clamam> There was a lot of people between 10.30h and 12.30h in the afternoon it was around 14.00 a bit crowded, the rest it was pretty quiet. So we had some time to resolve a few bugs in the network that we had build.CD donations:
<clamam> There where about 40 original CDs distributed and 20 copy's. The donations were well , after the payment of the booth (20 €) and parking (12 €) we had 54,25€ left.To Do with the donations:
<clamam> Buy Fabric tablecloth Payment for shipping promotional materials on the next fair we have to purchase blank CDs and cd-sleavesDecision:
<clamam> It was again a pleasant and successful fair. Thanks to Massimiliano, Hans and Thijs.
<clamam> i pasted the report in here, but something went a little bit wrong
<jean7491> can you comment the use of a pc with games to catch attention of visitors ?
<massimo21> while we plaied people was watching with curriosity
<clamam> it was an idea of massimo21 to setup a gamepc
<clamam> we wanted to try something else then only promote ubuntu
<jean7491> you can consider it as a kind of promotion !
<ILUsion> looks like a great way to get attention
<massimo21> idd
<clamam> the people stopt more ad the booth and asked some more questions
<massimo21> especcialy younger people
<jean7491> i've no experience about games, but it could be good to select a few "spectacular" games we could use in fairs, ... games are a first step towards the use of ubuntu
<JanC> might be useful to make a "game PC" image or metapackage or something
<clamam> we could select some games
<ILUsion> (Frozen Bubble)
<massimo21> i installed allot of games with playdeb
<clamam> we played frets on fire - Alien Arena - Yo Frankie, massimo21 vul dit even aan
<massimo21> like quake wars: enemy territory
<massimo21> nexuiz
<JanC> maybe combining your info with that from LAN party and maybe others would be a good idea
<massimo21> battle of wesknoth
<massimo21> astromenace
<clamam> JanC : we could do that
<clamam> the only thing is the GamePC
<JanC> make an Ubuntendo remix :P
<clamam> we had the personal pc from massimo21
<JanC> yeah, that's an issue
<JanC> for some games you need hardware that's powerful enough
<massimo21> maybe we can invest in it in the future
<massimo21> fir the eventbox
<massimo21> in our boot we also had a few chairs, it seems stupid but you really need them for let the people feel comfortable while testing ubuntu
<jean7491> your suggestion for 2 or 3 games easy to use with non powerful pc ?
<JanC> frozen bubble is very addictive of course ;)
<massimo21> frets on fire, tux racer, world of padman
<jean7491> ok
<ILUsion> definetly Frozen Bubble
<JanC> massimo21: I'm not sure those work well on all hardware though
<ILUsion> Osmos is also great but not open source; Tux Racer is also quite old so it should work on old HW
<JanC> remember that some of our demo hardware doesn't even have OpenGL support
<massimo21> if they work on a netbook than they arn't that heavy
<JanC> netbooks have small screen
<clamam> we have to try them out on the pc's from the eventbox
<JanC> but you have some point
<JanC> yeah, esting beforehand certainly makes sense ☺
<JanC> testing
<massimo21> in our eventbox are a few pc' that may work
<ILUsion> World of Goo is also a nice game (but I don't really know how well it works on older / non-OpenGL HW)
<ILUsion> and for kids there is also GCompris
<JanC> also, decent graphics cards aren't too expensive now, if the built-in one can be replaced
<JanC> ILUsion: isn't that closed source?
<ILUsion> World of Goo; I thought they were going to open-source that after the Indie Game Bundle?
<JanC> ah, possible
<JanC> some of them were
<JanC> anyway, let's go to the next point on the agenda
<ILUsion> (hmm apparently World of Goo is not one of the open-sourced ones)
<jean7491> thanks for the information, we continue, other comment about hasselt ?
<jean7491> and we can add games as topic for a future meeting
<clamam> everyone has to see what for games they can play with the hardware available in the eventbox
<jean7491> you are right, to be tested before the fair, of course ! next item #2 Nielse computer dag (26/9) - report
<clamam> we can not tell people what games to play because the evnetboxes are not the same
<jean7491> exactly Clamam ! ILUsion your comment about niel ?
<jean7491> i've no info from nero
<ILUsion> Niel was really nice; we also made a little use of games and movies
<ILUsion> Nero set up Big Buck Bunny on his tv screen to loop, which got a bit of attention
<ILUsion> Hugo set up some demos on his netbook with external screen: some video editing, GCompris, ... which also worked wonders and I used Frozen Bubble to get some attention
<ILUsion> I think we mostly spent our time convincing people of all the benefits and helping with some problems they had with their Ubuntu setups (drivers, DVD playback, ...)
<ILUsion> unfortunately I cannot compare to previous years, and no information about the number of discs distributed. My personal view was that a lot of people were asking how much the computers cost (but that might be explained by the second hand fair that was going on)
<jean7491> it is indeed a classic question in the dipro computer fairs ! what about the contact with club monitor, which has a section linux/ubuntu ?
<ILUsion> I had little contact with the organization of Club Monitor; but some of their members were happy to support us in convincing others to give Ubuntu a try (and also some explaining of the features, etc)
<jean7491> ok, thanks for your help, it was your first experience !
<ILUsion> no problem
<jean7491> and next time, as expereinced ubuntero, you will explain to others how to do in such an event ! again thanks
<jean7491> next item #3 Dipro Kortrijk (10/10)
<jean7491> for now, only 2 volunteers from ostend en brugge, and nobody from kortrijk area !
<jean7491> as optimistic, i hope more volunteers, ...
<jean7491> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ComputerFairs/Kortrijk_2010-10-10
<jean7491> i suppose no comment ?
<jean7491> next item #4 Dipro Brugge (17/10)
<jean7491> volunteers are still welcome for a few hours !
<jean7491> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ComputerFairs/Brugge_2010-10-17
<selckin> should talk about games every week to get people to pay attention
<jean7491> we can add anitem Promotion - the use of games in the agenda of the meeting ! just ask for it !
<jean7491> ... an item ...
<jean7491> next event, for information : 21-22/10 free software + computers demo days in Ghent Zwijnaarde, organized by Linux-Service
<jean7491> other comment for events ?
<ILUsion> can I add another thing to the report for Niel? I think we had too many netbooks (4 in total) and too little big computers/laptops
<JanC> ILUsion: if the report is on the wiki, please edit it ☺
<ILUsion> *too few
<jean7491> ILUsion : can yoou summarize what was said to write the report or to send it to nero for coordination ?
<ILUsion> I'll fill in a partial report in the wiki and ask nero to add whatever is missing
<jean7491> ok, thanks !
<jean7491> other comment about events, for example, any idea about (release) parties for 10.10 ?
<jean7491> if no comment, next topic ...
<ILUsion> can't we follow the lead of Vancouver?
<clamam> ILUsion : Vancouver?
<ILUsion> i.e. a real party (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i22efbYLj70 )
<clamam> that's a PARTYYYY
<jean7491> why not ? (release) parties can be fun, just who will organize it (not necessary large scale), but as i understood, just fun to be together
<ILUsion> that is indeed the question
<jean7491> but for that, you need local initiative as people don't like to move just for a few hours and a drink
<jean7491> more (if any?) at the next meeting
<jean7491> topic # 2. Promotion
<JanC> 10/10 will be the kortrijk dipro fair, maybe we can have a drink around there after the fair? ☺
<jean7491> idd, i can have a drink with wamukota during of after the dipro !
<jean7491> first item Adding links to the website
<JanC> I will maybe come too, just want to wait for people from near Kortrijk to put their name on the wiki ;-)
<jean7491> ok, then perhaps a drink with 3 !
<jean7491> wait and see !
<jean7491> first item Adding links to the website
<jean7491> we already discussed the topic, see draft in the wiki https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/Website/Commercial_links …
<jean7491> the email contact-address for this matter (contact@ubuntu-be.org) is ready, i think
<jean7491> we will start (this week, i hope) with an announcement in the mailing list and looking for interested companies/organizations through personal contacts
<jean7491> JanC comment ?
<jean7491> JanC no comment ?
<jean7491> second item, t-shirts for Ubuntu-be
<JanC> well, the address should work, so please do...
<jean7491> ok
<jean7491> result doodle poll for a preselection: 14 votes: 7x v2-be; 6x v4-be; 7x v6-be
<jean7491> see the designs in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/PromotionMaterial/ProposalsT-shirts
<jean7491> ... but, as warddr (leading the project is not available today …
<jean7491> i suggest a new meeting lead by warddr to compare the price estimations of the 3 preselected designs , and – to take final decision or organize a new poll via doodle?
<massimo21> ok
<jean7491> other comment ?
<massimo21> what about the prise for te sleeve
<jean7491> no idea, warddr should have the information
<massimo21> then we just qait
<massimo21> wait
<jean7491> ok
<jean7491> item 3 ubuntu and facebook
<massimo21> it is started
<jean7491> the ubuntu-be facebook page is now working with an animation team administrating the page
<clamam> http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=87950312093
<massimo21> but is not a page but a group
<massimo21> so everyone can just post on it
<jean7491> i learn every day something !
<jean7491> volunteers to work in our facebook team can apply to through irc or mailing list
<jean7491> and suggestions/proposition to improve our facebook image are welcome
<massimo21> or they just can post whenever they feel like
<massimo21> i already changed the image
<jean7491> and thanks to the facebook team for the work !
<massimo21> but it still can be better
<jean7491> other comment ?
<clamam> no
<jean7491> item 4. ubuntu and education
<jean7491> as we already discuss, we need an “education-team” to help the promotion of ubuntu in schools and everywhere (content and how to?).
<jean7491> to clarify the idea, suggested education-team should be a discussion group which could help with advice(s) action teams and other people on the field.
<jean7491> but we need a volunteer to start with and lead the project
<jean7491> suggestion ?
<ILUsion> I'm willing to work on content for the education-team but I do not want to be team lead
<jean7491> ok, i took note of your proposal, same for bram (blankenberghe)
<jean7491> we continue with topic # 3. Update Wiki
<jean7491> item #1 I found a wiki page about linux/ubuntu courses and updated the page with my information:
<jean7491> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/Education/NL/Courses
<jean7491> please feel free to contribute to the update of the page
<jean7491> next : item #2 structure of the wiki
<jean7491> I found a lot of pages like stand-alone because not linked with the home page of the belgian team
<jean7491> i propose to review the page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam
<JanC> about education, adding Belgian schools that use Ubuntu to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Education/UbuntuSchools might be a good task to start with too
<JanC> jean7491: maybe some of those pages are outdated too?
<JanC> the standalone ones I mean?
<jean7491> but sometimes interessant, for example 2008kickoff pages ... and others
<jean7491> and first step to link all (non outdated) wiki pages to the home page through several levels –
<jean7491> the 1st level can be limited to 10 topics 1. Mission - 2. Who - 3. Contact- 4. Meetings - 5. Activities - 6. Education and documentation - 7. Public Relations- 8. Material - 9. Support - 10. To Do
<jean7491> and the rest will follow in other levels
<jean7491> likely we need a specific meeting on this topic and a good preparation
<jean7491> of course not everybody is interested in this topic (but i learned a lot by surfing in our wiki)
<jean7491> other comment on this topic update of the wiki ?
<massimo21> ther is a lot of work on ia1a2a3a4a5t
<massimo21> on it
<jean7491> idd
* bbartek est parti (Quit: Ik ga weg)
<jean7491> but not for today !
<jean7491> topic# 4. Support points map status
<jean7491> map has been replaced by a list of support points which renewed their commitments
<jean7491> mongolito404 is working further on this issue,
<jean7491> i've no other information on this topic
<jean7491> next topic # 5. Things living in the mailing list and others questions ?
<jean7491> Belgian team monthly report : we still need someone taking the lead for monthly reporting
<jean7491> aim is to inform ubuntu community about our activity
<jean7491> JanC for comment ?
<JanC> hm, yeah, I should make the report this week I suppose
<jean7491> perhaps just create the page "current", for which day of the month ?
<jean7491> i've to check again how we should work
<JanC> yeah, I know there is a page on the wiki on how to do it ☺
<jean7491> other question not in the agenda ?
<jean7491> if no other question, last topic, next irc meeting ?
<jean7491> proposed on wednesday 06/10 or thursday 07/10 at 21 h. ?
<jean7491> your choice ?
<JanC> both are okay for me, maybe also ask warddr or whoever else we want to be there?
<massimo21> both are ok for me too
<clamam> both ok
<jean7491> ILUsion ?
<jean7491> as warddr already told he is ot available wednesday, let's try thursday 07/10, hoping he will jointhursday 07/10 at 21 h.
<massimo21> ok
<massimo21> good night
<jean7491> end of meeting - thanks to all for your participation, and have a good night !
